Breastfeeding and Cups and Tears

On our way home from vacation, Tom and I were talking about our upcoming trip back to Myrtle Beach. This one is kid-free though. He said we need to start working with Owen on cups because at 11 months, I’m not giving him a bottle. I don’t think there’s a reason to start him on a bottle at this point. He’s had so few of them that we probably shouldn’t try to introduce one now.

Let’s just say the cup conversation led to tears. Luckily, I wasn’t driving at this point, but still… here we are on our way home from a wonderful vacation and I’m crying about giving my baby a cup. But… that’s not really what I was crying about. I’m going to be away from my baby for almost a full 5 days. For a breastfeeding mom and baby, that’s going to be really rough. I need to start building up a bit of a supply for the freezer to use while we’re gone, but at the time, that was the least of my concern.

What if Owen won’t nurse when I get home?

Cute Breastfeeding Friendly Outfits

This post contains affiliate links.

Breastfeeding is far from glamorous. There were many days in the beginning when I would just sit around in a pair of gym shorts and a nursing bra. If you’ve ever breastfed, you know what I’m talking about. The boob is out so often and you’re covered in milk and spit-up, why bother, right? But… then you hit that nice part where you’re not leaking 24/7 and you’re able to leave the house. You’re still nursing, but want to look cute too.

Here’s an option that’s super casual and cute, but functional.

9 Months of Breastfeeding

This post contains breastfeeding pictures and affiliate links.

Last week we hit the 9 month mark of breastfeeding! There were times in the beginning I did not think that was going to be an option at all. It was definitely a struggle during that time, but I’m so glad that we toughed it out and sought help to make sure we were successful.

I’ve been asked “how long are you going to nurse him?” and my response is “no idea”. I honestly hope that he self-weans somewhere around a year, but if not, that’s okay by me. He really only nurses about 6 or so times a day at this point and if he wants to nurse before bed after he hits that magic year mark that everyone seems to think is the end, that’s okay.

Shari Criso’s Breastfeeding Tips & Tricks

Shari Criso’s round-ups were shared with me and are Shari’s opinions. I received no compensation for sharing, but I completely support breastfeeding and am happy to share them with you!

Today starts World Breastfeeding Week! Renowned lactation consultant and Registered Nurse, Shari Criso, is sharing her round-up of must-have essentials every new moms needs to make breastfeeding a success. Breastfeeding rates have continued to rise over the past decade, according to data released by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.  It’s in large part due to the health benefits of this liquid gold: lower risks of ear and gastrointestinal infections; diabetes and obesity; and mothers who breastfeed have lower risks of breast and ovarian cancers.

Shari Criso's Breastfeeding Tips

Shari Criso’s Top Breastfeeding Myths:

Myth #1: A large percentage of our population just can't make enough milk to fully nourish their babies.

Fact: Our bodies were made to breastfeed and our species has survived for hundreds of thousands of years this way. It is actually UNCOMMON for a mom to carry a pregnancy, deliver a baby, and then just not be able to feed it. It does not make sense. There are some moms who may have issues with milk supply, but most of the time it is due to inaccurate advice to supplement with formula because of a "perceived" low supply issue instead of a real supply issue.

Myth #2: That if your mom or sister couldn't breastfeed, that you won't be able to breastfeed as well.

Fact: I don’t know what happened with a woman’s mom or sister, but I do know that their mother’s mother, and her mother before that, and so on…were able to breastfeed or they would not be here. We come from a line of women that were able to produce enough and feed their babies because that was the only way. Although the ability to breastfeed can have a genetic factor, this is usually not the case. Most of the time the reason that the mom or sister was not able to breastfeed is due to reasons that were not medical issues, but rather misinformation or assumptions about their bodies ability to make enough milk.

Myth #3:  That you have to have the perfect diet and lifestyle to make good and enough milk.

Fact: This is just untrue. If having the perfect diet, enough rest, not too much stress, etc. were major factors in your body's ability to feed your baby then our species would have died off long ago. People throughout history have lived through some of the most difficult situations and still were able to feed. Although our own health does make breastfeeding easier, it is not critical in making enough or good "quality" milk.  A good diet will keep you healthy, but regardless of what you are eating your milk is rarely effected except in the most extreme cases.

Myth #4:  Breastfeeding will change the shape of your breasts.

Fact: Breastfeeding itself is not the culprit.  Other factors that can change your breast appearance more than breastfeeding includes BMI, age, history of smoking, large pre-pregnancy breast size and number of pregnancies.

Munchkin’s LATCH Bottles for Breastfed Babies

I received free products as part of my Ambassadorship with Munchkin.

Owen is strictly breastfed, so when I found out we were receiving the new Munchkin LATCH bottle for May’s shipment, I was a little bummed. In Owen’s 8 months, he’s had maybe 20 bottles. Maybe. It was really hard for me to be able to test this since I can’t actually be the one to use it. I mean, why get it from the bottle, when the tap is right there?

When I went to the Disney on the Road event a couple weeks ago, I had to pump quite a bit to make sure Owen would be good to go while I was gone.

Itzy Ritzy’s Nursing Happens Infinity Scarf

I was sent products to review. All opinions are my own.

I’m proud to say I’m an ambassador for Itzy Ritzy’s new Nursing Happens infinity scarf! I was so excited when they finally arrived!

I got all dressed for church and off we went.

Itzy Ritzy Nursing Happens Breastfeeding Scarf

At church, per usual, Owen started to get fussy. I was so excited about my new nursing scarf. I undid one loop and got situated. I had Tommy hand him to me. Then I chickened out. I haven’t nursed in public before. I had just gotten this scarf. I changed my mind.

When we got home, I decided we’d practice with the scarf before we tried it out in public.

Dads Can Help with Breastfeeding

Project: Breastfeeding inspired this week’s Friday 5. If you haven’t heard of Project: Breastfeeding, go check out the website or their Facebook.

How Dad Can Help With Breastfeeding

Be Her Cheerleader

Breastfeeding is really hard. Everyone seems to talk about it like it is the most natural thing in the World. It is natural for our bodies to breastfeed, but it takes quite a bit of learning and practice before you have it down. Mom will definitely remember that Dad was her biggest supporter during the struggles.

Bravado Mama

I’m very proud to be a Bravado Designs Mama for 2014! Throughout the year I’ll be sent samples of new products and new colors.

bravado designs

If you’ve ever attempted breastfeeding, you know the ups and downs that you’ll encounter. Breastfeeding can seriously wear you down. Most days I feel completely gross, sitting at home in my chair all day basically just switching Owen from one side to the other. I read a post last week from another mom that said she wasn’t sure why people needed to wear nursing bras and I was completely blown away by it. She said you should be able to easily do it wearing your normal bra. Clearly, she never nursed a baby full-time. I’m sure that most breastfeeding moms feel very similar to the way I feel. We need to feel like a woman again, not a milk machine. Bravado! Designs allows me feel like a woman, but allows me to be nurse my baby whenever, wherever I need to.

Beautiful Breastfeeding?

I wanted to breastfeed Charlie, but with his heart, it took too much energy. He was using more energy trying to eat than the calories he was putting in. So... a pump was brought into our room and I started to pump. The nurses were all impressed at the crazy amount I was pumping. It's really amazing what our bodies can do. My body knew that he needed lots of that good stuff filled with calories to help him grow. I immediately felt disconnected with him though. Even in the hospital, everyone else was feeding him my milk and all I was doing was pumping.
