10 Tips For a Smarter Home

Thanks to Direct Energy for sponsoring today's discussion.

If you’re like us, you’re always looking for ways to save a little money. Take a look at your electric bill and see what you can do make it a little easier on the wallet.

I’m a stay at home mom now, which means my television is on most of the day (not that we’re always watching it), the computer is usually on, and during the summer/winter the AC/heat is on. When I was working, there were days that no one was home for over 10 hours. During that time, we were able to change our thermostat up/down to account for no one needing it. Since this is not the case anymore, we’re working on other ways to make our home smarter.

10 Tips for a Smarter Home

One thing we’ve really been trying to do is use more natural light during the day. We have a big window in our living room and with our new blinds, we get more light through the window than we would if the light was on. Remembering to turn the lights off is hard for anyone. If we don’t turn them on- we don’t forget.

Another way we conserve energy is by using our ceiling fan instead of turning on the AC as soon as it gets a bit too warm. The same concept applies to using blankets to keep warm.

Road Trip Activities & Tips for Little Ones

Tomorrow morning we’ll be driving to Surfside Beach in South Carolina for our family vacation! From our house, it’s about a 9 hour drive straight through. With the boys, we expect it to take about 12 due to stops. For a 3 year old and a 10 month old, that’s a really long and boring drive. For the parents, it’s not much better. We’ll have the dvd player with us, but want other ways of keeping the boys happy along the way.

Tips for Grocery Shopping with Kids

I received an eMeals plan for free. No other compensation has been received. This post contains affiliate links.

Getting the grocery shopping done can definitely seem like a task these days. It has to be done though. For some reason, the people in this house want to eat. And they do it every day. I like being able to get in and out of the store quickly, but I also need to make sure I get everything I need!

Sure… I could wait until Tom gets home at night and go then, but that’s really not always an option. Some nights he doesn’t get in until almost 8 and then we eat dinner, put the boys to bed, and I don’t feel like running out then. Don’t get me wrong, I do love grocery shopping alone, but we don’t all get that luxury once kids are in the picture. Hopefully these tips will help you get your grocery shopping done with kids in tow while you keep (what’s left of) your sanity.

Shari Criso’s Breastfeeding Tips & Tricks

Shari Criso’s round-ups were shared with me and are Shari’s opinions. I received no compensation for sharing, but I completely support breastfeeding and am happy to share them with you!

Today starts World Breastfeeding Week! Renowned lactation consultant and Registered Nurse, Shari Criso, is sharing her round-up of must-have essentials every new moms needs to make breastfeeding a success. Breastfeeding rates have continued to rise over the past decade, according to data released by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.  It’s in large part due to the health benefits of this liquid gold: lower risks of ear and gastrointestinal infections; diabetes and obesity; and mothers who breastfeed have lower risks of breast and ovarian cancers.

Shari Criso's Breastfeeding Tips

Shari Criso’s Top Breastfeeding Myths:

Myth #1: A large percentage of our population just can't make enough milk to fully nourish their babies.

Fact: Our bodies were made to breastfeed and our species has survived for hundreds of thousands of years this way. It is actually UNCOMMON for a mom to carry a pregnancy, deliver a baby, and then just not be able to feed it. It does not make sense. There are some moms who may have issues with milk supply, but most of the time it is due to inaccurate advice to supplement with formula because of a "perceived" low supply issue instead of a real supply issue.

Myth #2: That if your mom or sister couldn't breastfeed, that you won't be able to breastfeed as well.

Fact: I don’t know what happened with a woman’s mom or sister, but I do know that their mother’s mother, and her mother before that, and so on…were able to breastfeed or they would not be here. We come from a line of women that were able to produce enough and feed their babies because that was the only way. Although the ability to breastfeed can have a genetic factor, this is usually not the case. Most of the time the reason that the mom or sister was not able to breastfeed is due to reasons that were not medical issues, but rather misinformation or assumptions about their bodies ability to make enough milk.

Myth #3:  That you have to have the perfect diet and lifestyle to make good and enough milk.

Fact: This is just untrue. If having the perfect diet, enough rest, not too much stress, etc. were major factors in your body's ability to feed your baby then our species would have died off long ago. People throughout history have lived through some of the most difficult situations and still were able to feed. Although our own health does make breastfeeding easier, it is not critical in making enough or good "quality" milk.  A good diet will keep you healthy, but regardless of what you are eating your milk is rarely effected except in the most extreme cases.

Myth #4:  Breastfeeding will change the shape of your breasts.

Fact: Breastfeeding itself is not the culprit.  Other factors that can change your breast appearance more than breastfeeding includes BMI, age, history of smoking, large pre-pregnancy breast size and number of pregnancies.

Tips for Taking a Baby and a Toddler to the Movies

This week was our first adventure to the movie theater with both boys. Charlie went once with me when about 2 years ago. He did pretty well then, but that was just the two of us. This time we had Owen!

If you’re thinking about taking your baby and toddler to the movies, these tips are for you!

Cookout Safely with Kids

With summer here, there will be many opportunities to host a cookout or attend one. These tips can help keep kids safe while enjoying the party.

Cookout Safely with Kids

Prep & Set-Up

Before guests arrive, take a walk around the deck, yard, or wherever your cookout will be taking place. Make sure to pick up any large sticks or rocks that could be a hazard to little ones. Put away any garden tools or chemicals that may be in the area. These things may be obvious to adults, but to children, they’re dangerous.

The grill is probably the most dangerous thing at a cookout. When setting up your grilling area, make sure that you’re putting it out of the way. You don’t want the kids (or anyone really) to keep having to go past it to play or while running around. If you can, make sure you the wind isn’t blowing in the direction of where people will be sitting. This will help the smoke from blowing right into everyone’s faces. If need be, consider putting a baby gate around the grilling area.

5 Apps That Will Save You Money

This post contains affiliate links.

I’m a couponer. Honestly, I’m one of those “crazy” couponers that have enough shampoo, conditioner, and deodorant to last us a few years. However, it can be overwhelming. Many people do not want to bother with the time and energy it takes to do all of that clipping and comparing and whatnot that it takes to “coupon”.

Smartphones have made it so easy for everyone to get a slice of the “money-saving” pie.

Strawberry Banana Chocolate Chip Mini Muffins

Disclosure: I got this product as part of an advertorial.

We always have fruit on hand in our house. The problem is, sometimes it doesn’t get eaten before it starts to go. I hate to waste anything, so I try to make the best out of whatever it is. If I give Charlie half a banana and he doesn’t want the other half and I don’t feel like eating it, in a freezer bag it goes. If we end up with 2 extra bananas when they’re past their prime, in the freezer they go. This recipe was made with bananas from the freezer and strawberries that were just about ready to be pitched.

Everything’s cuter in mini-size, right? And… you never feel as guilty eating 6 mini-muffins as you do multiple regular size muffins.

How to Get Rid of Cable and Still Be Entertained

This post contains affiliate links.

Last year we decided to get rid of cable during the spring and summer months. We figured we could save some money and spend more time outside anyway. In our house, the tv is pretty much always on, even if no one is really watching anything. I guess we have it for background noise and something to catch your eye every now and then. Most of the shows we follow are fall shows and we watch football in the fall, so we thought it wouldn’t be too hard to give cable up for awhile.

10 Ways Toddlers Can Help With Baby

Charlie loves to help out with his brother! We try to make him feel as though we need his help, but don’t pressure him into helping. Make sure not to rush your toddler while they are helping or they might resent you or the baby. From the beginning, we made sure Charlie knew that Owen loved him and loves when Charlie helps. Though toddlers might not be able to completely do a task on their own yet, they can certainly get involved and feel important in taking care of their new baby sibling.

5 Tips for Selling at a Consignment Sale

I believe it’s crazy to spend full price on anything, especially baby and kids’ clothing and gear. They grow out of everything so quick, that used items are often in near perfect condition.

We sell at a big consignment sale twice a year. It’s a great way to make some money and get rid of the outgrown children’s items in your house. For us, it’s usually just a trade-up. We make money selling our old items and spend about the same getting new items that we need.
